Nowadays windows are made to eliminate the aforementioned issues. The U factor is a rating that you look for in replacement windows before you buy them. This is by the National Fenestration Rating Council--or NFRC. What this does is measure the amount of heat or cold that transfers through a window--period. Basically –you want a low U factor--which means it is a slow transference of heat so the insulation is better.
Get the E Factor:
This means low emissivity glass. It uses a metallic substance on the inside of the glass. In the winter, the home receives its heat from sunlight or your heating system. It will reflect back onto the glass and bounce back--keeping the home heated throughout and saving you heating costs. The rest of the year, the metallic substance will have a reflecting affect for the UV and heat. This does a lot to keep furniture from fading as well.
