New Construction Windows And Doors Versus Replacement
The decision to use new construction windows and doors versus replacement windows and doors takes a bit of research but it's not rocket science. It comes down to what most things do and that's money and investment. Especially when its a home because this is an investment you'll have for many years to come.
What are new construction windows?
New construction windows actually only serve one purpose in two situations. They are brand new windows that are made to fit a new property. They are also used in a preexisting home on a new addition to that home. For instance if you want a conservatory or an enclosed patio on the home you already have you will get new construction windows. Most people get a closed in room or garage or even a car port for either an office or an extra room for the extra income.
What does new construction or retrofit windows have in common?
There are things you need to look for in both types of windows. The first thing is a rating from a non profit organization called the National Fenestration Rating Council. This organization basically makes sure that they meet any energy standards that the window manufacturer claims. So, this is the most important thing to know for either type of window. Without that guarantee--you've spent money on windows that don't do the job they were meant to. It's sort of like buying sneakers without the soles on them.
Metal in the hardware.
Making sure you have metal in the fastenings that it takes to lock the window components together is what you need to have for both types. However; make sure they are stainless steel because rust is the enemy of window longevity.
Make sure you have matching hardware so that it looks all well put together. Mismatches make a new window look kind of unattractive and on old windows--it just looks like you bought mismatched lots. Not nice and will bring down the curb appeal should you decide to sell.
Having sash, caulk and frame is less durable and too easily broken then heat welded joints.
There are a lot of installation methods and designs so a consultation with a fitter will open your mind to ideas and at least you'll know what you need to do for your particular dynamic.
How are new construction windows fitted?
For example--when you have a home and have another section built onto it the builder will break away the sections of the window hole and expose the studs so that the window will actually fit directly into the stud work.
How are replacement or retrofit windows fitted?
Retrofit windows are fitted where there are already existing frames. The fitter doesn't have to take away anything like they do for new construction windows. The window just fits tightly into the existing frame.
